Tips for Decorating a Dorm Room
Finally, a place all to yourself without parents or adult supervision. This is better known as the college dorm room. Decorating your dorm room creates a space truly authentic to you and your needs.
Be inspired! The best place to start is finding a theme that inspires you for the year ahead. It could be a bright and sunny theme, artistic, or just a plain man cave. The goal is to design a place where you feel most at home. Pinterest is a great tool to use to find inspiration for room decorating.
The classic dorm room is notorious for being small, combat this by staying organized with shelving and containers. You can purchase these items at Target or the Container Store. The goal is to maximize the space while also staying organized.
Don’t forget to coordinate with your roommate! You’ll want appliances such as a fridge to store late night snacks, a coffee maker for early mornings and a printer for essays. Between the two of you, you can decide who brings what to make the room even more homier.
Let’s talk about decorations… there are plenty of ways to add your own flare and personality to your new room. First, create a color scheme and choose your decorations accordingly. Accent throw pillows, blankets, and posters are a great way to go. Another tip is to print pictures of your loved ones to hang on your wall. This helps me when dealing with home sickness.
Make sure to create space for you to work and be productive. Designating a space in your room purely for work aids in focus and productivity. Don’t forget to prioritize why you’re in college in the first place - to get an education!
Warm up the space for colder months. Adding a nice cozy rug or even investing in a space heater will be great additions to your new home.
Light up your space with lights and lamps. You can even purchase multi-colored lights to give your room a vibey feel! If permitted, candles are another great way to create a comforting glow.
I firmly believe in investing in the quality and look of your room. Your room is a sanctuary and should be somewhere you can go to unwind and de-stress. Now it’s your turn to go and create the dorm genuine to you!
Carmen Fanning
Hello my name is Carmen Fanning. I'm currently a senior in the ultrasound department at FHSU. Although my major is science, I’ve always enjoyed writing for as long as I can remember. My most enjoyable classes have always been English classes because of how it can be thought provoking and an outlet of emotions and information. I’m not a loud person, so it’s nice to put my thoughts into the world through writing. My other hobbies include roller skating, cooking, thrifting and reading. I hope to continue writing post graduation as an enjoyable hobby. I’ll be entering the health care field as ultrasound tech and will continue my degree at a hospital of my choosing. Not sure where yet, but I’m excited for the journey!
